Steel purlins are highly popular architectural material commonly used in the construction industry. They are roof framing members that support the weight of the roof and deck. They run parallel to the building eave and are either supported by the walls of the building or rafters.

Types of steel purlins

There are mainly 2 types of steel purlins, namely C section steel purlins and Z section steel purlins.

C section steel purlins

C section purlins or C shaped purlins have equal flanges. They are mainly used to support roofs and walls joists and may be used in single spans and unlapped continuous spans in multi-bay buildings. C section steel purlins allow easy handling and storage. They are best suited for use in small and medium sized buildings to give structural support.

Z section steel purlins

Z section steel purlins or Z shaped purlins are stronger than C section purlins. They come with one broad and one narrow flange making them suitable for lapping. They are mainly used in commercial applications but are also suitable for smaller buildings such as garages and carports.

Steel purlin accessories

Purlin brackets

Purlin brackets are general purpose angle linkages ideal for connecting C or Z section purlins. Purlin Brackets are punched to match standard purlin punching in the ends of purlins of a matching size.

Steel bridging

Bridging helps to keep the joists vertical so they won’t twist out of place. Proper bridging helps to distribute the load onto neighboring joists.

Top hat battens

Top hat battens are widely used in the construction industry in commercial and residential projects.

They are generally used to screw in roofing sheets. Some of its applications include garages, sheds, and carports.
